EBACE 2014: Satcom1’s AvioIP achieves 1.5 Mbps over SBB

Satcom1 logoA test of Satcom 1’s AvioIP router software application aboard a Legacy 600 has seen data speeds of between 1.2 Mbps and 1.5 Mbps being achieved.

This was the industry’s first ever installation of four Inmarsat SwiftBroadband channels running on a Cobham Satcom SDU-7330 hardware unit aboard a Legacy 600.

This performance was possible thanks to Satcom1’s dual SwiftBroadband channel aggregation, backed-up by acceleration technology for web browsing, which is one of the features of the Satcom1 AvioIP software suite installed on the router.

Ivan Grigoriev, Alamo’s test engineer, said: “Acceleration was switched on for SwiftBroadband channel 1, still on background IP. Multiple speed tests were performed with the registered download speed being between 900 kbps and 1200 kbps.

“After that, channel 1 and channel 2 were switched to X-stream with aggregation – the high-end profile configured especially for the VIP on board.

“Multiple speed tests were then performed with the registered download speed being between 1200 kbps and 1500 kbps. I’ve never seen anything like that on SwiftBroadband before.”

Voice calls using passengers’ own smartphones were successfully tested as well, including iPhone, Android-based and BlackBerry devices.

Francois Goudal, R&D Manager at Satcom1 explained: “Acceleration technology by XipLink, incorporated into our software, played a crucial role in achieving this result.

“The raw maximum speed on aggregation of two channels is between 800 kbps and 900 kbps. By running acceleration on any stream that can be compressed you are able to boost data speed significantly.

“In this case, it has been almost doubled.”

328 Design secured the world‘s first certification of a four-channel Swift Broadband upgrade aboard an Embraer Legacy 600 on the back of the installation, which was completed by customer ABS JETS, following the recent award of EASA certification with FAA and TCCA validation.

328 Design, worked with Alamo Engineering GmbH on the development side of the aircraft modification and engineering support. Together they performed system configuration and post-installation tests ahead of the hand-over to ABS, an Embraer Authorised Service Centre, based in Prague.

Satcom1′s AvioIP router software application suite has been installed on corporate, VVIP, and head-of-state aircraft providing the passengers with true “office-in-the-sky” since 2005.
