Florida-based Satcom Direct has set the ball rolling for “Ka-band on bizjets” by placing an order with Honeywell for 10 shipsets for the upcoming Inmarsat GX Aviation service.
GX Aviation will be the first global, high-speed mobile broadband service, offering up to 50Mbps to an airliner and slightly lower speeds to business aircraft.
The service is scheduled for worldwide availability for aviation services in the first half of 2015, with one satellite already in position and two more in the pipeline. Inmarsat also has an order with Boeing for a fourth Ka-band GX satellite.
David Greenhill, president, Satcom Direct, said: “We are excited to bring this new global broadband service to market. As a distributor of GX hardware, we look forward to offering a complete solution to the business jet community.”
GX Aviation is part of a US$1.6 billion programme, with Honeywell as the exclusive provider of the avionics hardware. It is also the master distributor of airtime for the business aviation market.
